I am pleased to welcome you to MGC Asian Traditional Textiles Museum. This international museum showcasing traditional textiles of Cambodia, India, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam was conceived in April 2002. The museum is a reflection of long association and cooperation of Mekong and Ganga region through textiles.

Mekong and Ganga are the two civilizational rivers in Asia, which continue to be the source of livelihood along their banks. The concept of the Museum came from looking at the prosperous textiles traditions in natural fibers of these two regions.

Women have been intimately involved in textile weaving as an integrated part of household activity in the Mekong delta and some parts of India.

The MGCATTM aims to familiarize the public with range of textiles traditions of India and Mekong delta. The MGCATTM is also indicative of the civilizational, cultural and commercial linkages among the member countries down the centuries.

Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Asian Traditional Textiles Museum was opened in April 2014. The Museum explores raw materials, methods of processing the raw materials, weaving methods, methods of decorating the textiles, variety of textiles etc. from the Mekong-Ganga region. The museum features all-encompassing processes of making of traditional textile from around the two river cultures.

Cambodia, India, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam are the countries, who have collaborated in making of this museum. The museum features the strong textile traditions of these countries.

MGCATTM aims to make the viewing and understanding of variegated styles of textiles, their processes and contemporary fashion etc. a joyful and enriching experience.

I visited this exquisite museum with two designers and we were so delighted by the exhibitions, tour, history and rich knowledge that this beautiful museum holds for public viewing. Professor Shastri was generous with her time and deep knowledge of the textile history and the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation. We met the wonderful young professionals on the staff and left excited, inspired and knowing we had made meaningful new connections and friends. This museum should be on every visitors list to explore in Siem Reap. Kudos to all at MGCATTM.

A walk through the galleries of this wonderfully conceptualized museum, gives a feel of connectivity between the mighty rivers Ganga and Mekong. A visit to this museum is an opportunity to experience the textiles treasures from India, Cambodia and other members States of Mekong region. This is an excellent effort, not only at showcasing our vibrant textiles traditions but also at nurturing those traditions by providing a larger audience an insight into the traditional skills and textile crafts.
